June 21 - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Sat, 4C-D. Hike from Big Basin Park Hdqtrs to Waddell Beach and back. Meet 8:00am, Argonaut Shopping Center near Starbucks on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Rd or at Big Basin Hdqtrs 8:45am. Call leader if you have not hiked with the DHS. Plenty of heat on Howard King and McCrary Ridge.
Ocean in view at last.
But when we got there, it was cold and windy.
There was distant lightning and thunder toward Monterey and no lack of odd clouds.
Distant cold Berry Creek waterfalls. Left for photo, right for movie... unfortunately I forgot that movies don't work in portrait mode.
The final ridge at last. We'd all lost five pounds in the heat, with aching feet.
Then we tried to find the lost pounds.
Richard Aufrichtig provides this GPS-derived trace of the outing:
Click on Dashboard to get the data. According to the data we hiked over 23 miles (23.44) in a moving time of nearly 7.5 hours. The elevation gain is cumulative and counts every up/down step, but if you click on the Elevation tab, you can get a curve that has more reasonable elevation data. You can see that we climbed 2 peaks that add up to just over 2000 ft.
