Sierra Azul gate SA02 is along Hicks Road, above Guadaloupe Reservoir, with very limited parking (two cars max) so I parked at McAbee and walked across the dam to Hicks Road. Descending the dam face was surprisingly slippery since the surface seems to have been repainted with a very slick anti-grafitti coating. The other way to get there is from Providencia but the lateness of the season suggested that I didn't want to get too many seeds in my socks. This turned out to be a useless precaution however.

From gate SA02 we already know about an unofficial route up to Woods Road but there is another trail that proceeds along the creek for a way. I decided to scout it out as a possible group outing.

The trail becomes deer trails eventually, and though deer are good at finding the best available way over time, that way may still not be very good when passing through thick brush. So although I eventually found an old logging skid that led up to Woods Road, I couldn't recommend the route to any but hard-core poison oak enthusiasts. It did pass through an interesting flat that had enough artificial stuff lying around (fencing, hose) that somebody had spent some time there - but I wasn't able to identify their route in and out. None of the obvious directions seems close to a road or an easily passable trail, though rough deer trails leave in numerous directions. I did find an interesting red flower that I hadn't seen before, perhaps a silene.

I came back along Mine Hill Road.
