The Mentzelias were past their prime, but as elusive as ever, favoring places where you're not encouraged to go, nor encouraged to stay, and even taking a picture involves a delicate balance. The Mentzelia season is about over, because the sharp things protecting the lower slopes are all coming into their season as the hills prepare for their annual browning around May 10.
Attempts to take pictures in the moonlight were pretty much foiled by my forgetting to bring a tripod.
