Oct 9 Sat - 3C hike - Mount Tamalpais. A big climb to the East Peak, then through the cool forests of the mountain's northside, with views north to the Coast Range and Tomales Bay. Meet: 8:30 am at the Mill Valley Book Depot. Carpool: Leader at Battery East parking lot on Lincoln Ave, east of the Toll Plaza at 7:55 am sharp. Leader: Richard Boyden.
The ascent started steeply up paved roads and then a dirt road and then dived abruptly onto ill-defined deer paths.
A plane had crashed trying to follow one of these paths, 60 years earlier.
From time to time we emerged briefly from the chapparal and redwood gloom to behold stunning clear vistas of the bay.
Some scaled the summit while others rested at the rest rooms.
A fleet gathered outside the Golden Gate in preparation for the grand entrance under to the bridge for Fleet Week. The Blue Angels performed noisily over the city later, but we could barely see them and they didn't register on the digital camera at all, thanks to their stealth technologies.
Mt St Helena loomed strikingly clear on the northern horizon, with Snow Mountain barely visible.
Lunch in Potrero Meadows was enlivened by an alien visitor.
We then descended to West Point Inn for lemonade, followed by a descent along the Tenderfoot Trail, subject of a $75000 fund-raising drive in Mill Valley. Then we followed Cascade Lane past unbelievable scenery.
Mill Valley does not appear to be a battleground area for the November election.
